The breaking of Thalpior

He goes by many names: Hrethvak the Kelp Lord, Blade of Mthulus, Hunter of Thalpior, Breaker of Traitors.

When Commander Thalpior led his fifty loyal dredge and fled Krathus IV, Mthulus was not enraged. He was not vengeful. He had foreseen the betrayal, for he had long since tasted the frailty in Thalpior’s heart.

Hrethvak, commander of the Deep Shroud, was summoned before his Prime Lord and given the Blades of Mthulus — twin scythes imbued with the venomous blood of the Great Sunken One. And Mthulus uttered but a single command: “Bring hither the traitor Thalpior — his bones broken, his soul undone.”

So Hrethvak hunted. Time and again he and Thalpior clashed, each leaving the other scarred and bloodied. At last, upon the volcanic wastes of a dead world, Hrethvak cast down his foe. Thalpior’s body lay broken, his soul unravelled — yet he did not die. The blood of the Great Sunken One seeped into him, gnawing away all remnants of honour and virtue, until nothing remained but submission to its will, and through it, the will of Mthulus.

Thus the existence of Hrethvak — and the Blades of Mthulus he bears — remains a living covenant to all the dredge legion: never falter, never doubt the will of the Great Sunken One… nor the will of Mthulus.
